History of Sundarganj Upazila
Although there is no exact information about the naming of Sundarganj, the name 'Sundarganj' is found through various legends or legends. The rivers Brahmaputra, Teesta and Ghaghat flow through this town. It is said that there used to be a ganj or bazaar near the river and this ganj was called for trade and commerce. Sundarganj is the name of this town because of the good manners, character and appearance of the people of Ganj.
There is another legend which says that Sundar Lal Bahadur was the son of Raja Gopal Roy Bahadur of Tajhat. He used to come to this area to collect rent and introduce fairs. It is said that the area was named Sundarganj after the king's son.
According to another legend, in the early sixties, there were 13 Indaras in this area (on the outskirts of Sundarganj Upazila Sadar) and there were beautiful women in this neighborhood. They used to bathe in these indaras. Besides, people from different areas used to celebrate the month of Muharram every year. The upazila has been named as 'Ganj' after the gathering of the people and the bus of beautiful women.
According to another legend, the Kharsrota is a tributary of the Teesta, which joins the main Teesta and joins the Brahmaputra. Later, the river stopped flowing and turned into a rhyme or bill, but its connection with the Teesta continued downstream. Due to the connection of the Brahmaputra river with the Teesta and the Teesta river with this beel, large boats or barges could easily anchor on the banks of this huge beel (dead river). Due to the good naval communication, a base for import and export of various types of goods was created. The name of this ghat is Nau-ghat because many boats or barges are constantly crowded in this ghat. Goyal or Goyla community lived next to this ghat. The cowherds used to make and sell various dairy products including milk, curd, sweets and manda at this ghat. For this reason, the ghat is named after the herdsmen. And every year a month-long fair or ganj was held around this ghat. Sweet-manda was an interesting food of Ganj. There was also a beautiful neighborhood near the ghat. According to the legend, Sundarganj is the name of this area or mouza as there are beautiful brides in Sundari Para and a 'fair or ganj' is set up around the barn ghat.
Thana was formed in 1855 with the northern part of Bhabaniganj and Chilmari. The Thana Bhaban was named Sundarganj Thana as it was located in Sundarganj Mouza. Later an administrative system was formed around this police station. In 1983, Sundarganj Thana was upgraded to an upazila.
